I made this piece inspired by two beings: Grandmother Willow from the film, Pocahontas and Uncle Bruce Keaulani, a beloved leader and Kahuna in Hawai’i. Both are pillars and respected sages in their communities. Both shaped me from childhood into adulthood.

I believe more than ever, we need to be listening to indigenous elders. We need to be curious in learning the wisdom of their timeless brilliance, magic, and compassion. We are life’s future ancestors who will be tasked in nurturing this earth and generations below.

Wherever you are in the world, I hope you pause often to look up at the trees. Trees remind me that we are never really alone. We are not experts or owners. We caretakers of the land, responsible of stewarding sacred living.
